Colchicum luteum
Suranjan is Unani name of Colchicum luteum Baker, a type of lily plant with yellow flowers. It is found growing on grassy slopes in the temperate Himalayas, Afghanistan and Turkestan. The corm or rhizome of plant is used for therapeutic purpose. It is traditionally used for headache, gout, rheumatism, diseases of the liver and spleen.

The alkaloid, Colchicine present in the form of bitter variety of Colchicum luteum and Colchicum autumnale, is an amorphous, yellowish-white alkaloid, which darkens on exposure to light and gives a yellow coloration with strong mineral acids. It is a weak base and readily dissolves in water, alcohol or chloroform but is only slightly soluble in ether or petroleum spirit.

Colchicine is effective in treatment of gout and periodic diseases though the exact mechanism of action by which it works is not known. This phytochemical has anti-gout and anti-inflammatory activities. It can be used as an option to relieve gout attacks for people who cannot take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for some reason. Colchicine is considered best remedies for acute gout pain.

Aloe barbadensis
Aloe Vera is a plant species whose extracts are used in numerous ways and it is mostly cultivated in parts of Europe and India. This plant produces gel and latex which are used in numerous beauty and medicinal products. The gel obtained from the inner part of the succulent leaf is a thick clear substance while the yellow latex is obtained from beneath the skin of the plant. The extracts obtained from this plant have been known to possess numerous properties which can offer treatment to diverse kinds of health conditions. It can either be consumed or applied on the skin for treatment .

The main constituents found in aloe Vera plants include anthracene, anthraquinone, anthranilic acid and cinnamic acid. This plant is also known to possess anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.

Aloe Vera has been used for treating skin related problems, bowel diseases, diabetes, asthma, ulcers, inflammation and arthritis. The usage of this plant has been dated back to many centuries by the humans. This plant is very effective in treating arthritis as it can reduce the amount of inflammation in the joints when taken orally or applied on the area of inflammation. The constituent anthraquinone is responsible for stimulation of the immune system for the anti-inflammatory response.

Neutral polysaccharides (aleomannan and acemannan) found in the species of aloe vera showed anti-tumor, immune-suppressive and anti-inflammatory properties. The anti-inflammatory property enabled it to inhibit the activity of COX-2 (cyclooxygenase) enzyme which is involved in the inflammatory pathways.

Pimpinella anisum
The essential oil extracted from anise seed also has significant anti-inflammatory properties and provides pain relief comparable to taking 100 milligrams of aspirin and 10 milligrams of morphine, according to research published in the U.S. Library of Medicine.

Osteoarthritis:
Early research suggests that taking 500 mg of guggul (containing 3.5% guggulsterones) three times daily might improve arthritis pain.

Rheumatoid arthritis:
Early research suggests that taking guggul 3000 mg daily for 4 months can improve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
